Microsoft has debuted State of Decay 2, its latest zombie-themed survival game, with some deeper systems under its revamped gameplay. Capitalizing on the franchise's strengths, the successor debuts some promising prospects while driving a heavier emphasis on developing a sustainable community.
One of State of Decay 2's largest components is its base building, providing players with the ability to shape handcrafted settlements reflected in the game's world. But packing deeper mechanics than the original, for some, there may be a lot to learn.
Getting started with bases in State of Decay 2
Establishing, growing and maintaining a base is key to survival in State of Decay 2, providing a home to your digital society. Inside a base, you can accommodate people's needs, gather resources and advance the group's available technology.
In the game's opening hours, you'll be guided through the steps of establishing your first outpost and fostering a community within. Going forward new opportunities to expand your settlement will surface, through the 'facilities' system.
After establishing a successful base, you're not stuck there forever either. Over time new locations can be unlocked, which can change in layout and size.
State of Decay 2 facilities explained
Facilities are a modular backbone to State of Decay 2 construction, which add increased functionality to your base. Installed facilities can be further developed through optional upgrades, granting additional alterations or improvements. Facilities can also be damaged by zombies and must be maintained through costly repairs.
However, managing facilities doesn't come cheap - building, upgrades, and repairs all require resources or the game's main currency, 'Influence.' Many of these are also subject to build times, and since offline progression has been retired, these are tracked through real-time in-game.
Facilities are managed by visiting a dedicated menu, which employs an abstracted view of your base. A modular card system is used for viewing and upgrading facilities, with a cursor to reveal potential actions for a selected area. New upgrades can be placed on empty spaces, while occupied spaces can be upgrades or cleared.

As you recruit new survivors and your community grows in State of Decay 2, you’ll need to start branching out to find new bases to occupy, ones that have more space for facilities and resources. Bases are safe zones that provide shelter and supplies for your survivors and are places where survivors can reside in State of Decay 2. Bases are slightly different from Outposts, which offer similar benefits but cannot be lived in. Claiming bases allows you to build new facilities and store items in multiple locations.
In State of Decay 2, there are three main map regions: Drucker County (Plateau), Cascade Hills (Foothills), and Meagher Valley (Valley). Each map contains an assortment of base locations to claim and secure. Below, we’ve listed all the bases players can find in State of Decay 2, along with their price point and a list of facilities available in each.
All Base Locations in Drucker County
There are seven bases in Drucker County in State of Decay 2, one of which is the home base that is unlocked as part of the main story. Most of these bases are situated near the edge of the map, which means you may have to travel further distances to drop off resources at these locations and to move from one base to the next.
Vogel House
The Vogul House is the first home base you build and establish in Drucker County for State of Decay 2. This is a small base that only offers three spaces for additional facilities. The Vogel House only requires a single survivor to claim, and doesn’t cost any influence, making it perfect for your starter home base.
Cabin Park Motel
On the south side of Drucker County is the Cabin Park Motel, which can become your new home base for five survivors and 1,000 Influence. At its price and size, the Cabin Park Motel can make for a decent upgrade from your initial home base in State of Decay 2. This base site comes with a built in Kitchen and a pair of Sheltered Beds, along with several other facilities. It also has two Large Slots and a Small Outdoor Slot available for new add-ons.

Barricaded Strip Mall
On the north side of Drucker County in State of Decay 2, you’ll find a Barricaded Strip Mall that is waiting to be claimed. This base is not an easy one to secure, however. The Barricaded Strip Mall requires 8 survivors and costs a whopping 3,500 Influence to unlock. It’s for good reason though, as this base comes with a handful of existing facilities and has several open slots available for expansions. Here’s what you can expect at the Barricaded Strip Mall base:

Wheelhouse Truck Stop
On the west end of Drucker County, five survivors and 1,000 Influence can unlock a new home base at the Wheelhouse Truck Stop in State of Decay 2. This base only has one Large Slot open for new facilities, but it does come with a number of existing facilities, which are listed below:

Mike’s Concrete
On the west side of Drucker County and southeast of the Wheelhouse Truck Stop is another inhabitable site called Mike’s Concrete. If you’re looking for a home base with multiple Outdoor Slots open for new facilities, then Mike’s Concrete is a good base location for you. This site comes with several Sheltered Beds and a Backup Generator as well. Claiming this base will set you back 1,500 Influence and requires six survivors.

Wally’s Bar and Grill
On your way to the east side of Drucker County, you can encounter a potential base site at Wally’s Bar and Grill. This base is closer to the center of the map, making it somewhat easier to access than other base locations. Wally’s Bar and Grill only requires 500 Influence and four survivors, making it one of the cheaper base locations on the Drucker County map. However, this also means that it doesn’t have a lot to offer in terms of facilities. It does have three Open Slots available for you to add new facilities, though.

Knight’s Family Drive-In
Further east of Wally’s Bar and Grill is another potential home base called the Knight’s Family Drive-In. As you can guess, this base site features plenty of parking spaces. You can set up a base camp at this drive-in for 1,000 Influence and six survivors. This base location comes with four Small Slots and one Large Slot open for additional facilities and renovations.

All Base Locations in Cascade Hills
Cascade Hills is a region in State of Decay 2 that is known for its hill-covered terrain. If you’re looking to occupy some of the best bases in this area, we suggest saving up for either Mohr & Mohr Distributing or the Container Fort base locations. However, the best base depends on what you’re looking for, so consider the location, existing facilities, and open slots when judging whether to claim a particular base in State of Decay 2.
Justineau House
Players who head to Cascade Hills first in State of Decay 2 will start off at the Justineau House, located along the southeast edge of the map. This is a starter base, so you’ll be limited to just a couple slots available and a handful of existing facilities. Still not bad for a free home base.
Bridge Fort
As the name implies, the Bridge Fort is a small fort located at a bridge that crosses the river near the southeast side of the map. From the Justineau House, travel west until you run into the river. The Bridge Fort is located near the road. This base only requires four survivors and 500 Influence to claim, making this a great base to move in to next if you’re looking for an upgrade from the starter base.

Church on the Hill
There are a couple home base locations found near the center of the map in Cascade Hills, one of which is the Church on the Hill. This potential home base is located just northwest of the Bridge Fort described above. Claiming the Church on the Hill requires five survivors and costs 1,000 Influence. Being on a hill, this base gives you a good vantage point over the area.

Corner OfficeState Of Decay 2 Sniper Tower Guard
Another base located in the heart of Cascade Hills in State of Decay 2 is the Corner Office base. Since this base is so close to the center of the map, it allows you to easily travel between different bases and areas without using up too many resources. Like the Church on the Hill, the Corner Office base requires five survivors and 1,000 Influence to claim. It also comes with a total of five Open Slots both indoor and outdoor, making this a decent home base for those who want room to add new facilities.

Loch & Keogh Self Storage
In the northwest corner of Cascade Hills, players can settle in at Loch and Keogh Self Storage, a storage facility composed of a few buildings and plenty of open space. This potential home base comes with plenty of built-in facilities, including Elaborate Storage, a Watchtower, and even a Secret Distillery. It will cost you 1,500 Influence and six survivors to claim, but the Loch and Keogh Self Storage is a great base to move into as your community continues to grow in State of Decay 2.

Container Fort
On the southwest end of Cascade Hills in State of Decay 2, you’ll find a base called the Container Fort. While this base does not have a ton of existing facilities, it does come with as built-in Workshop 3, which is perfect for when you need to repair your weapons. This base also comes with Firesafe Storage 3 and three parking spaces. There’s also plenty of open slots to add more facilities if you wish. However, this base will cost you 3,500 Influence and eight survivors to claim, so make sure your community is large enough to take over this base location.

Mohr & Mohr Distributing
Finally, to the northeast you’ll find a somewhat hidden base location called Mohr & Mohr Distributing. This base is a bit off the radar in Cascade Hills, as you can’t spot it from climbing a tower. Instead, you will need to physically drive to the northeast section of the map to find this base location. Follow the road that runs parallel to the river and look for this base on the right side. Mohr & Mohr Distributing comes with a handful of Sheltered Beds, a Machine Shop, Huge Fuel Storage, and five Open Slots for new facilities. This base can be yours for six survivors and 1,500 Influence.

All Base Locations in Meagher Valley
State of Decay’s Meagher Valley is a much more open area than Cascade Hills. It’s also quite easy to travel across in comparison to the other regions. While Whitney Field may be considered the best base in Meagher Valley, there are some other base locations that may be worth claiming along the way, depending on the needs of your community.
Clarington House
As the starter base for Meagher Valley, the Clarington House is the first base you will claim in this area. Like the Vogel and Justineau Houses, this home base comes with some pre-existing facilities and a couple open slots, free of charge.
Country Church
Within the northwest section of Meagher Valley, there is a small Country Church that can be claimed and occupied for just 500 Influence and four survivors. It doesn’t come with much space for expansion, but it does have some Pews that can be cleared out to make room for additional facilities, such as beds.

Mazarra Farm
In the middle of the Meagher Valley map in State of Decay 2 is Mazzara Farm, a medium-sized base location situated along the east side of the river. To claim this home base, you will need to have at least five survivors and 1,000 Influence. Mazzara Farm comes with a decent number of Open Slots and pre-existing facilities for the price, so consider moving into this base when your Clarington House is starting to get cramped.

Squelones Brewing Company
Also located near the center of Meagher Valley is the Squelones Brewing Company, which is just east of Mazzara Farm. This potential home base comes with a Water Tank, Tasting Room, and a couple of Stills, as well as a clearable facility space. There are also plenty of Open Slots available for new facilities both indoor and outdoor. Claiming Squelones Brewing Company costs 1,500 Influence and requires six survivors. Considering its proximity to the Clarington House, it may be worth saving up to claim this brewery as a future home base.

Rural Police Station
While exploring the north end of Meagher Valley, keep an eye out for the Rural Police Station, which can be claimed as a new base for just five survivors and 1,000 Influence. It offers the same number of Open Slots as Mazzera Farm, so if you were looking to build a base somewhere in the north, then the Rural Police Station is a good alternative.

Camp Kelenqua
On the west side of the Meagher Valley map just north of the lake is Camp Kalenqua, another medium-sized base that comes with a decent number of facilities and Open Slots. While this base location doesn’t come with Sheltered Beds, you can clear out some debris to make room for additional facilities if needed. Camp Kalenqua can be yours for 1,000 Influence and five survivors.

Whitney Field
Lastly, in the southern part of the map you can find Whitney Field, a large base which comes with plenty of beds, parking, and Open Slots available for renovations. As one of the best base locations in Meagher Valley, Whitney Field comes with hefty requirements: 3,500 Influence and eight survivors.

Power and electricity are an important asset in State of Decay 2. Supplying power to your base in State of Decay 2 boosts the efficiency of some of the facilities. It also boosts morale and happiness in the base, plus, it lights up your base nicely. There are several different options for how to get power in State of Decay 2, including generators, a solar array, or a power outpost. They will all depend heavily on your current situation with Influence and other stuff.
How to Get Power in State of Decay 2?
There are several ways to get power for your base in State of Decay 2. Arguably the easiest method is the generator mod. Some slots that can make use of power offer the option of hooking up the generator mod, or portable generator, if you have one. While it is the easiest option, it’s also the biggest hassle. It drains fuel, it takes a while to build (during which there will be noise) and start up (also noisy when it’s running), and you have to restart it manually on occasion. Luckily, you can do that on the go through the Base tab in the menu.
Then, there’s the option of using one slot in the base to build a generator, if you have the necessary . It also guzzles gas, and makes quite a bit of noise. It does, however, power the entire base, which is pretty great. If one of your survivors has Knowledge of Electricity and some materials, you can build a Solar Array on a large slot. It doesn’t require fuel, and, most importantly, it’s silent. It’s very much worth your while.
Lastly, arguably the best option other than the solar array is capturing a Power Outpost. That’s expensive in Influence (check out our guide on how to farm Influence Points for more info), and it does also consume fuel, but it’s well-worth the investments. You can just set it and forget it, as it were, and it also provides a safe, zombie-free area, plus some other perks.
State of Decay 2 Solar Array – How to Get?
To get the Solar Array generator in State of Decay 2, you’ll first need a large slot in your base. As far as materials go, you’re going to need 10 Circuitry scraps. Lastly, one of your survivors need to have Knowledge of Electricity, which stems from Utility Knowledge. This might just be the biggest snag you’re going to have, because you’re likely going to have to obtain the appropriate textbook.
To locate the Electricity textbook, your first stop can be a Library. There are a lot of different Knowledge textbooks you can find there, and Electricity could be one of them. If not, make sure to check with traders or friendly enclaves. Once you have everything you need, all that’s left is to construct the Solar Array in your base.
How to Capture Power Outpost in State of Decay 2?
To capture a State of Decay 2 Power Outpost, you’ll need enough Influence, and at least one open Outpost Slot in your base. Specifically, you’re going to need 2000 Influence, which is about the price of a pretty decent home base in State of Decay 2. Plus, to keep the Power Outpost running, you’re going to have to sacrifice two Fuel per day.
Even though the cost is pretty steep, the benefits you’ll reap are great. For one, you’ll get a constant power supply for the entire base, leading to a significant boost in morale. Plus, it will also allow you to switch characters in the outpost, and you’ll get a supply locker, giving you an additional place to store items you might find while scavenging. Lastly, it provides a safe, zombie-free zone in and around the outpost.
